Through the tunnel

1. Identify the setting:

The story doesn't really speak of a setting but from what I read, I think it happened during wintertime.

2.Summarise the plot in 10-15 sentences:

In the short story we are introduced to a boy named Jerry. His mother was a widow and she could be overprotective and not that protective simultaneously. They went went on holiday to the beach like they always do and Jerry was enjoyed swimming. When his mother sun bathed, Jerry would go to the other side of the beach to swim. When he got to the other side he saw a couple of older boys swimming and he wanted to join them but was reluctant to. They greeted him but then after did not pay much attention to him again. Jerry was impressed by the fact that they could swim through the tunnel, he wanted to do that too. He prepared himself and even told his mother to buy him swimming goggles. He did a couple of exercises to prepare himself mentally and to get fit. When he was inside the tunnel he was trying to gasp for air and could not see well, he was tired. It was a struggle for him to get out of the water on to the shore and his nose was bleeding. He finally got to the shore and climbed up the path to the villa and threw himself onto his bed. When his mother came, he quickly went to the bathroom to wash the tear and blood stains on his face. She was worried about him but then she did not fuss much because she knew that Jerry was a good swimmer. They finally set to lunch.

3. Describe the main character in 5-10 sentences:

Jerry was an only child who's mother was a widow. He was an 11year old English boy who enjoyed swimming. He was very courageuos, proud and determined. He went on holiday with his to a foreign country. He tried to please his mother but at the same time wanted to be independant. He was sort of lonely and the boys he saw at the beach did not really want to befriend him. His courage led him to do what the other boys were doing and that was going through the tunnel. He was a boy who was trying to prove to people that he could be independant and that he could also do what they did. He achieved his goal of going through the tunnel because of his determination.
