The Silk Scarf by Ahmed Essop

The setting:
Oriental Plaza in Johannesburg

The Plot:
 The story is about the wife of the appointed Foreign affairs minister, Mrs Nebo. One day she went shopping  with her friend and they bought a lot of beautiful items.  She saw a beautiful dress through the window of a shop, It was an Indian dress.She went inside the shop and bought the dress but with the dress she wanted to buy a matching scarf and she searched all over but could not find one. She finally came to a shop owned by Mr Sakur and she found the perfect silk scarf to match her dress, she was told the price and looked in her bag for the money but was 15 rand short so she decided to pay by cheque. Mr Sakur did not want to accept the cheque, it was a rule in his shop and he was not prepared to break it even though it was Mrs Nebo, the wife of the appointed Foreign affairs minister, Mr Clive Nebo. There was a little dispute, Mrs Nebo felt insulted and Mr Sakur did not care about who she was. Mrs Nebo wanted the silk scarf and she was not going to leave the shop without it. Her friend Margret was at her defence, trying to convince Mr Sakur about who Mrs Nebo was but Mr Sakur was very stubborn. Mrs Nebo's bodyguards tried to intimidate Mr Sakur but did not succeed, Mr Sakur was not scared of them. Mr Sakur did not want to accept Mrs Nebo's cheque because that would mean accepting cheques from other people too, he could not break his rules. Mrs Nebo was insulted and authorative but that got her nowhere. The other shop owners heard the dispute and came over to Mr Sakur's shop, when they found out who Mrs Nebo was, they tried to let Mr Sakur accept the cheque but he was adament about not accepting it. The other shop owners decided to buy the Silk Scarf for Mrs Nebo as a gift and she was happy but was displeased with Mr Sakur's attitude.

The main Character:
The main character is Mrs Nebo, the wife of the appointed Foreign affairs minister. It's as if she boasts in the riches of her husband. She lives in Houghton, one of the classy places in Johannesburg. She is the type of person who is full of herself. She is of medium height with heavy loins and has a smooth skin that was pampered by beauticians. She was an authorative person who expecting people to jump at her bark. She loved shopping in the most expensive places. She was the type of person who would match colors. She always wanted her way and was arrogant.
